It’s not really a secret that the cover and blurb are vital to your book’s success. But many authors assume that writing a blurb that looks decent and getting a cover from a professional designer is enough to ensure that they have their bases covered.
But the difference can be massive.
For example, let’s take a quick look at some results from a test I ran between these four professionally designed covers:
We can see that there’s a significant difference in performance between the best performer (18.7%) and the lowest performer (7.2%). The best performer converted 2.5x better than the lowest one.
And the best part about this: when you improve conversion, it helps all sources of marketing.
So if you like running ads, then having a better converting cover and blurb will help. If you don’t like running ads and run them reluctantly…then good news, if your cover and blurb convert better, then you can generally test a lot fewer ads since the conversion is doing the heavy lifting (if you want).
But it’s not just helpful for the ad side of things. A better converting cover and blurb will also help the performance of traffic coming from social media, your newsletter, the Amazon Algorithms, and so forth. Because all those people go to the same place: your book’s page.
And if the cover and blurb don’t convince them to buy, they’ll leave.
If you’d like to learn the process I used here to test these covers, along with how to test blurbs, then check out the 80/20 Cover & Blurb Testing Masterclass.
